Daisy is our first small dog, until now we’ve only had 40+ lb. dogs. We’re finding every day to be a new adventure with her, so this blog is as much a journal for us as it is a little light reading for anyone who’s interested. 🙂
There’s very little information “out there” about Havachons, so we hope we can shed a little light on this new designer breed for anyone interested in getting one of these sweet, loving pups.

what is your nickname?
Daisy’s got lots of nicknames, but we call her Puppy a lot because no matter how old she gets, she’ll always be a puppy to us. We also call her Nutter Butter, Fuzzer Nutter, and lots of other silly names!
Nutter Butter is sooo cute. My cats like french fries.
Daisy just had a taste of her first oven fry and she loved it too!

A warm hello to Daisy and her family! Daisy is too cute for mere words and she actually looks like a child’s stuffed animal.
As a matter of fact, when I was first contemplating about adopting a dog, I was seriously considering Havachons. As thinks turned out, I ended up adopting 2 beautiful Shih Tzu boys, instead. I don’t regret my final decision but I still love Havachons.

We were torn among so many different small breeds, but when we found Daisy, our hearts melted. For us, she was “The One” – all 2.6 pounds of her at 10 weeks old! Hi! I am looking into getting a Havachon puppy and came across your page! I was wondering if you could offer me any advice or suggestions? We’ve always had big dogs so I am looking forward to having something smaller and a little cleaner haha (we also have a Saint Bernard and Golden Retriever). How much does Daisy weigh? I am also concerned with what I am going to do with the puppy while I am at work all day… what do you do? Thank you!!!
Hi Ashley, and thanks for stopping by! We always had big dogs too, Daisy is our first small dog and I can tell you that small dogs are entirely different; we felt as if we were in a whole new world. Havachons are VERY smart and can be stubborn, but they’re also so sweet, loving, and cuddly. Daisy weighs 15 pounds, which is typical for a Havachon. Housebreaking was a bit difficult and became a war of wills; I’d say it took about 2 months for her to finally do the right thing, but a total of 9 months before she cooperated 100%, with no accidents (I hear this is typical). Havachons love company – they’re very social dogs – so if you’re going to be at work all day, it’s good that he/she will have the company of the other dogs. Daisy loves to play; she loves people and other dogs and gets along easily with them all. You probably already know that Havachons have hair instead of fur, so they have to be groomed pretty often and bathed weekly. All that said, I’d get another one in a heartbeat – the rewards definitely outweigh the work! Please feel free to ask any more questions you may have, and good luck with your choice! 🙂

I am so glad to have found you! There isn’t a whole lot of info out there regarding Havachons. Our Rosie is 10 months old.; have had her since she was 3 months. We are first time dog owners, so this is all new to us. We have 3 kids who adore her and my husband and I have grown to love her. She is sweet, but definitely has an onery side to her too! I loved reading your toy reviews. I just can’t believe how many toys we throw away….she chews through everything!! So thanks for all the info…I will be checking your blog often!!
I’m so glad to meet you, Jill! Up until we got Daisy, we only had large dogs, so this was a whole new experience for us. Small dogs are VERY different from big ones. Add to that the fact that, like you said, there’s barely any information on Havachons at all, and we felt like we were completely in the dark. But I have to say, even with the Havachon stubbornness and willfulness, their sweet, cuddly, loving side far overrides everything else. I wouldn’t trade Daisy for anything! 🙂
Regarding their Destructo-Pup side with toys, we’ve found that the Nylabone Dura-Chews made for “powerful chewers” are the best for Daisy. We have them for a few months before we have to replace them. They’re really hard and have no give at all when you squeeze them; if Daisy finds one tiny softer spot, she’ll pick at it until it’s destroyed – usually in 20 minutes or less. LOL! Guess what she’s getting in her Christmas stocking? 😉

Hi, I just came across your blog a few weeks ago and I love it! Daisy is adorable and I love seeing what she is up to. I saw you had a pretty big snowstorm several weeks ago and hope you are recovering! What state are you in? I’m in Ohio and we haven’t had anything yet! Hi Ruby! Havachons are a relatively new breed that are a mix of Havanese and Bijon. They don’t shed and are hypo-allergenic (as well as very sweet and cuddly) – a definite plus! Thanks for visiting our little world, we’re hopping on over to visit you too. 🙂
Hi, Daisy, We just lost our Bichon August 3rd. Her name was Dazy. Feel like we’ve lost an appendage.
Yesterday we went to Margie Cook’s and purchased a Havachon from her. Her name is Buttons and we’ll pick her up October 1st. Really can’t wait after seeing herr and reading all about your Daisy.

Hi Bette, I’m so sorry to hear you lost your sweet Dazy. It’s always hard to lose a pet member of the family, but these small dogs seem to become especially close to our hearts. How exciting, though, that you’re getting a Havachon! I’m sure you’ll absolutely love her, they’re very smart little pups as well as being extremely sweet and loving. We’ve found Daisy to be a wonderful combination of everything we love in dogs, from being very cuddly to being energetic and fun to play with. I couldn’t ask for a better breed! Hi Annabelle! Thanks so much! Yes, it was an unexpected transition from a large dog to a small one – we had no idea they had completely different reactions and requirements. It’s been an interesting and wonderful journey with Daisy!
Hi, I found your article on Daisy’s spay back from 2010. We are experiencing a difficult recovery for our sweet cockapoo as well. Everyone told us this procedure is no big deal, well Butter is four days post-op and not at all herself. I’ve searched for someone having similar issues and your post really helped. We’re still going to see the vet this afternoon, but Butter is doing some of the same things Daisy was doing: having short bursts, whining, loss of appetite, major discomfort. Breaks my heart. When did Daisy start to get better?
I’m so sorry Butter is going through a similar post-op experience as Daisy did, but I’m glad my post helped ease your mind a little bit. I would say it was about 2-3 weeks before Daisy’s pain level finally started to subside. The “no big deal” post-spay information you mentioned seems to apply to some degree to larger dogs – our previous dogs were all large (60 lbs and up), and they didn’t show any signs of suffering at all. But it’s a whole other world with many small dogs, unfortunately. As long as your vet says everything is healing well and there are no infections, it’s just a matter of time and lots of sympathetic cuddles. We really let Daisy guide us as to what she was able to do and what she wasn’t, but we made sure to offer her water and food regularly until she could start taking some. Putting water in a more easily accessible container can help too – in our case, we used a guinea pig water bottle that we held up so Daisy could drink while lying down or sitting and she didn’t have to bend herself uncomfortably to reach the bowl. That was the only way we could get water into her. We also offered small bits of rice and meat, which were more tempting to her, just to get some nourishment into her. The good news is that once you start seeing small signs of improvement, it’ll just keep getting better from there. Good luck, and we hope Butter starts feeling better very soon.

My wife and I were pleased to come across your blog. I’m Ed & wife – Gloria. We are getting our Havachon on March 20…when she is 8 weeks old. We had to give up our 18 year old chiuauahua (sp?) 2 months ago. He was my best buddy and constant companion and our lives have been very empty…..
I’m so sorry to hear about your chihuahua, Ed. I certainly understand how you and your wife feel; we felt the same way when we lost our shepherd-collie-husky mix. We rescued a dog a few years ago that looks nearly identical to Daisy! He even has close to the same patterning (his fur is a lighter brown). My husband saw a photo of Daisy and thought for a moment he was looking at our dog! We rescued him when he lived in Tucson. I wonder if they’re related somehow.
That would be so great if they were related, Samantha! Daisy is 8 now and was born in either Kentucky or Tennessee, but her siblings could be anywhere. I’ve often wished I could track down Daisy’s brothers and sisters, it would be so interesting on so many levels. 🙂 Thanks so much for writing!
