The Good, Crazy, & Adorable Life of One Havachon Puppy

Mischief Monday: THIEF!

on July 22, 2013

The heat wave here in the northeast has us indoors more than any winter weather we can remember (not counting the hurricane, of course!). Temps in our area are over 100 and the humidity is so high that the heat index registers 115. That’s just not right. Florida has been cooler than this!

We’re only about half an hour from the beach, but people on the beach are actually burning their feet on the sand and ending up going to area hospitals with blisters on the soles of their feet. It’s crazy!

Daisy wants no part of the heat. She doesn’t even like temps in the 80s, let alone this steam bath we’re in. When I open the door to take her out and that blast of heat hits her, she balks like a stubborn mule and I can’t budge her. Now she’s upped the ante and runs under the bed when she sees me getting her harness and leash out! We have a walking date with a friend and her dog next week, which I made for 9 AM so hopefully we won’t melt. Also hopefully this heat wave will break and Daisy will drop her stubborn routine. Whoever heard of a dog not wanting to go out?!

Meanwhile, our container veggies didn’t do so well this year. I think it was either the brand of seeds we used or that too many seeds took and the overcrowding didn’t allow them to produce fruit, but this thief – who clearly thinks he’s a rabbit – didn’t know there weren’t any carrots beneath the lush greenery and was sizing up his attack:

squirrel carrot thief

Those carrot tops are over a foot tall now, and still no carrots can be found beneath the surface. Just roots. Oh well, hopefully next year’s crop with a different brand of seeds and more spacing will be better (though this was never a problem before). Now that the trees are gone and our yard is sunny – TOO sunny, in fact, because with this intense heat I have to keep all the blinds closed in the back of the house since we have no shade anymore – we’ll probably try to put in a real veggie patch next year.

I'll just stay in here and watch everyone else sweat, thank you very much.

  1. Sometimes mom’s granny sowed the carrot seeds in a flower pot inside of her house, so they grow better. She used a mix between potting soil and some sand. The squirrel looks cute – but it is still a thief :o)

I don’t blame Daisy, its far too hot here! I’ve been snoozing in front of the fan most of the time and only heading out early in the morning or late at night

  3. Yuck, we have 100 but not that humidity. That must be awful. I hope you have better luck next year with a garden.

  4. Daisy that sounds really hot where you are. It is hot here too. Have a marvellous Monday and stay cool.
    Best wishes Molly

We’re have temperatures in the 90s with very low humidity so it is perfect for us. I’m not sure it would ever get too hot for the Poodles.

  6. Will and Eko says:

Caught in the act! I’m sure you would keep those squirrels away if the temp would just go down a bit.

  7. An early walk is a great idea. That way you can back in the house before it gets too hot, although I’ve noticed that lately by 9 a.m it can be pretty hot as well. Stay cool Daisy 🙂

Squirrels are EVIL. Maybe check and see if Daisy is welcome to walk in the mall? An early morning walk in the mall, before the shops open, in the AC, might be just the thing.

Our mall doesn’t allow dogs, but we’ve been taking her to PetSmart. We visit all the birds, fish, other dogs, cats, you name it – anything to give her a little exercise!

Don’t blame you for not wanting to go out in the heat Daisy. Too bad about the veggies!

Daisy is very sensible about staying indoors where it’s cool. Hopefully the heat wave will be over soon!

    Hey Daisy

I think you’re a really smart doggie! It’s not like you’re a squirrel and have to go out to look for food regardless of the weather!

Maybe you need some yummy ice pops to cool you off?

    Have fun,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  12. Wow! That’s an awfully high heat index! The weather is all mixed up. We are at the beach for a week and had light rain yesterday and the day before. We’ve been coming the same week for years and have never once had this kind of weather. I’ll bet you’re really missing your trees! Let’s just hope the heatwave doesn’t last. Daisy definitely has the right idea! 🙂

  13. We have a squirrel that has stolen all of our strawberries this year. Looks like the same guy 🙂

The heat wave arrived here, too! Since all of our windows go to the West and only one to the South, we live for some weeks as moles behind the roller blinds. I try to do the shopping as early as possible and go out for a walk only in the evening – except for visits in the swimming pool 🙂 I think mankind and pets should organize a huge worldwide referendum and FORBID temperatures above 80F!!! And someone should patch the ozone hole immediately!!!

  15. Novroz says:

Daisy!! you are one unusual dog 😉
Go out there where the sun shines beautifully 😉

  16. Dogs N Pawz says:

Daisy is one smart girl! We don’t like to go outside when it is hot outside either!
By the way, Phe is in a contest and if she wins we are donating a portion of it to the animal shelter she was adopted from. Phe would really appreciate it if you would vote for her! Gotta chase that squirrel away! Wooowoooooo, Ku

  19. Clowie says:

The temperature here dropped a little yesterday. I hope it’s a bit cooler for you now.

That is a cute squirrel but sweet Daisy you are much, much cuter. You look sweet watching squirrel TV. Hugs and nose kisses
